The Course — Adare Manor

Adare Manor is a parkland championship course in the village of Adare, County Limerick, Ireland — about 20 minutes drive from Shannon Airport. The estate is anchored by the 19th-century Adare Manor hotel, a five-star resort owned by the McManus family since 1988. The current course is a Tom Fazio 2018 redesign of the original 1995 Robert Trent Jones Sr. layout, commissioned by JP McManus and rebuilt over 21 months.

What makes Adare Manor a Ryder Cup venue

Three things. First, Fazio's 2018 redesign reshaped every green to add pin-position complexity and removed the Trent Jones original's softer scoring opportunities — the course defends par now in a way it did not in the 1990s. Second, the routing puts the River Maigue in play across six holes on the back nine, including the par-3 10th and the closing par-5 18th, creating risk-reward decisions exactly where Sunday singles drama traditionally lives. Third, the property has the infrastructure: 35,000 capacity grandstands fit cleanly around the existing routing, the McManus estate has accommodation and event-management experience from hosting the JP McManus Pro-Am in 2020 and 2022, and Limerick city is large enough to support the secondary spectator infrastructure (parking, transit, restaurants, hotels) that smaller Irish courses (Ballybunion, Lahinch) could not.

Captaincy State Of Play

As of May 2026, formal captaincy announcements have not been made for either side. Here's where things stand:

Team Europe

Luke Donald is widely expected to be retained as Team Europe captain. Donald led Europe to wins at Marco Simone in 2023 and at Bethpage Black in 2025 — the second of those particularly significant as the first European away-win since Medinah 2012. The European Tour's captaincy committee has signalled confidence in continuity, and Donald himself has spoken publicly about the appeal of leading on home soil. A formal Donald reappointment is expected in late 2026.

Team USA

The American situation is more uncertain after the 2025 Bethpage loss. Keegan Bradley, the 2025 US captain, returns as a continuity candidate. The PGA of America has not formally confirmed. Veteran candidates including Jim Furyk (2018 Paris captain) and Tiger Woods (frequently floated, never accepted) have been mentioned in trade press but neither is expected to take the role. A formal US captaincy announcement is expected in late 2026 or early 2027.

Vice-captains

Each team appoints up to five vice-captains. Expected European vice-captaincy candidates include Pádraig Harrington (former captain, Limerick local), Edoardo Molinari (continuity from 2025), Thomas Bjørn (former captain) and Justin Rose (active player wind-down). McIlroy, Lowry, McDowell and Harrington all carry vice-captaincy potential depending on playing-team selection.

Qualifying Paths

Standard qualifying applies. Twelve players per side, six earned via points, six captain's picks.

The first formal qualifying-table reveal happens after the 2026 Open Championship in late July; rolling updates run through the 2027 PGA, US Open, Open Championship and BMW PGA / BMW Championship culminating in the captain's-pick weekend after the 2027 BMW Championship.

The McIlroy Storyline

Adare Manor is the storyline of McIlroy's next 18 months and probably the storyline of his career outside of the Masters wins. He has played in every Ryder Cup since 2010 (Celtic Manor) and is one of Europe's most decorated team-event performers — 15 wins, 9 losses and 4 halves through 2025. His 2025 Bethpage performance (3.5 of 4 possible points, the highest individual return on the team) was the engine of Europe's away win.

Adare adds a layer no previous Ryder Cup has carried for him:

• Home soil for the first time. Every prior European Ryder Cup of his career — Celtic Manor, Le Golf National, Marco Simone — has been in continental Europe or Wales. Adare is on the island of Ireland, a 90-minute flight from his Holywood (Northern Ireland) hometown. He has spoken publicly about the personal significance.
• The Northern Ireland-Republic of Ireland cross-border symbolism. McIlroy holding the Ryder Cup aloft in Limerick after representing Europe is sporting symbolism without recent precedent. Irish golf has produced disproportionate Ryder Cup talent (Harrington, McGinley, Clarke, McDowell, McIlroy, Lowry, Power); this is the first time the trophy plays for keeps on Irish ground.
• Vice-captaincy possibility. If McIlroy doesn't auto-qualify and isn't picked, vice-captaincy is the natural alternative. He has not committed publicly to one path or the other; back-to-back Masters winners at age 38 in 2027 typically aren't vice-captains.

Recent Ryder Cup History

Europe arrives at Adare Manor as defending champions for the first home defence since 2014. The 2025 Bethpage result — comeback Sunday from 7.5-4.5 down going into singles — reversed the Whistling Straits 2021 USA blowout (19-9) and the Hazeltine 2016 result, putting the cup back in European hands and providing the home-defence narrative that drives the 2027 build-up.

Format And Schedule

Total: 28 matches, 28 points available. 14.5 needed to win the cup. The defending champion (Europe) retains the trophy on a 14-14 tie. Match-play scoring: holes won, 1 point per match, half-point for any all-square match.

Travel, Tickets And Hospitality

Public ticket ballots typically open ~18 months before a Ryder Cup. For Adare Manor 2027, expect ballot opening in mid-to-late 2026 via the official platform at rydercup.com. Hospitality packages (chalets, sky boxes, Champions Club) are sold by Ryder Cup Europe's official hospitality partner. Travel-inclusive packages from US tour operators tend to sell out 6–12 months out.

Getting there

• Shannon Airport (SNN) — 20 minutes drive. Direct flights from Boston (BOS), New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), and most major UK airports. The default landing point.
• Dublin Airport (DUB) — 2.5 hours drive. More flight options globally; rental car or pre-booked transfer required.
• Cork Airport (ORK) — 90 minutes south. Limited international flights; typically a feeder route from London or Dublin.

Staying nearby

• Limerick city (20 minutes) — the obvious accommodation hub, several Hilton, Marriott, Maldron and indie hotels. Sells out 6 months in advance for Ryder Cup week.
• Killarney (90 minutes south) — tourist-classic Irish town with strong hotel infrastructure; many Ryder Cup visitors base here and add a 2–3 day Killarney/Kerry golf itinerary either side of the event.
• Galway (90 minutes north) — second-most-popular base; pairs naturally with a Connemara or Lahinch detour.
• Adare village — limited capacity, typically reserved for hospitality-package guests of the McManus estate. Walk-on access only on event days.

Most travelling visitors build a 7–10 day itinerary around the tournament. The headline courses within 90 minutes of Adare Manor:

• Lahinch — 75 minutes (links classic, County Clare)
• Ballybunion Old — 75 minutes (often top-10-in-the-world links, County Kerry)
